Whatever you’re an American Football (Gridiron to all you Aussies) fan or never heard of it, we invite you to experience Wollongong’s 1st TOURNAMENT – FLAG GRIDIRON STYLE!

With the NFL Draft and Gridiron NSW seasons quickly aproaching, we figured we would give you a lil’ taste of the play actions, pick-6s and TD celebrations yet to come by inviting you to grab your mates for some quality team bonding time to play as a team OR register as an individual to be placed on a team wiht some soon-to-be-friends!

WHY FLAG GRIDIRON IN THE GONG?

Now...you may be shaking your head wondering why run this strange sport in Australia?  Well...strap in...I’ve got a lil’ story to share.  The GM of Urban Rec Wollongong = Lindsay.  Lindsay is American and has grown up around American Football – from going to NCAA college games in her hometown of Eugene, Oregon (GO UO DUCKS!) to following her NFL team, The Patriots (c’mon...no brandwagon fan here, she lived in Boston ¾ of the year from the age of 9...), to volunteering as an Athletic Training student for the University of British Columbia and Florida International University to working for the CFL team BC Lions to now (finally), volunteering with Northern Sydney Rebels for the past 2 seasons.  Needless to say, this lady has a passion for the sport.

So...when the opportunity to move to Wollongong to start Urban Rec presented itself, Flag Gridiron was the 1st thought as a sport to launch as a chance to share the love of Flag Gridiron with the region.

That, and there’s a Gridiron club in Wollongong = Wollongong Mustangs – that was basically the kick in the butt to get Lindsay to move down here because they wanted a Flag Gridiron league.  haha…

WOLLONGONG MUSTANGS:
The Wollongong Mustangs field teams in both the Division 1 (over 19’s) and Colts (15 to 19 year old) competitions in the Gridiron NSW league.  In 2021, there is a plan to start a Women’s team, and our hope is that we can ignite a passion for the sport through our Urban Rec Flag Gridiron leagues to help support them in this mission.
